Tolbooth Restaurant, Stonehaven

We were given a voucher for Stonehaven’s Tolbooth restaurant at Christmas and have waited for a sunny weekend all summer to use it. Our thinking is that it would be a shame to waste the trip to Stoney without being able to sit outside afterwords having a few speciality beers from The Marine. Well, summer came and went with barely a glimmer of sunshine on a free Saturday to get us over the hill so we decided to just book a table and hope for the best.

The restaurant lives right on the harbour in the upstairs of the old tolbooth jailhouse. Every seaside town needs to have a good seafood restaurant sitting right on the pier. Certainly every town with a fishing heritage like Stonehaven’s deserves one. Continue reading “Tolbooth Restaurant, Stonehaven”

Video Blog! Prawn and Chorizo Paella

I thought I’d do something special to mark the 1st birthday of the blog this month. Here’s the first video blog on the site! I’m cooking paella for this as it was one of the first recipes I posted on the blog back in August 2010.

It’s strange watching yourself on video. It’s also hard to edit! I seem to stir things a lot… must have cut out about 10 minutes of footage which was just me stirring a pan. The paella isn’t completely authentic (no carmelised bottom layer of rice and onions for example) but it’s delicious and really easy.

An afternoon in Brewdog and The Athenaeum

Saturday was the semi-final of the Scottish League Cup. Aberdeen played Celtic and lost 4-1, as the penalty which lead to the fourth goal was awarded I made my way out of a packed Irish pub in an Aberdeen side street with my brother, disgusted at the 30 minutes of football we’d just witnessed. Giving up on the game we decided to try to find a better way to spend the afternoon.

I haven’t written about Brewdog despite them being a big local (and national) story over the last couple of years. That’s because I’m not really a big fan of their beer. I love their attitude and they certainly have a fantastic knack for promotion. The Fraserburgh based brewery has been a huge success since they began in 2007 and have done a superb job of getting up the noses of the more established brands and the booze establishment. They seem to have caught the general public’s imagination and are converting a large number of young drinkers into fans of IPA and steering them away from bland, commercial lager. Grilled Langoustines

So we return to the scene of the crime. This is what I was going to cook the night I made our grill explode. *sigh* I put the grill on to heat and closed the door while I fannied about preparing stuff. Of course the high heat of the grill had the predictable effect of superheating the glass inside the oven door until it expanded to the point where it couldn’t expand any more. The resulting explosion of glass scared the crap out of me and ruined the chances of grilling the langoustines I’d bought for tea, so they were boiled instead. Tonight I gave it a second go. Food and drink I’ve enjoyed this week

Haven’t done much serious cooking again this week due to training and the Scotland game on Tuesday. The braised lamb shank on Sunday more than made up for it though, it tasted amazing. Just because there’s no recipe post doesn’t mean I haven’t stopped eating though. Continue reading “Food and drink I’ve enjoyed this week”

Pad Thai

I used to make a lot of stir frys. By which I mean I used to buy a pack of stir fry veg, some noodles and chuck it in a wok with some chopped chicken and soy sauce. It wasn’t bad, but it never really stood out or tasted close to anything from a good restaurant. So eventually I thought I’d give a pad thai recipe a try. Continue reading “Pad Thai”

My food weekend – Franco’s and a Sunday Roast

I’m still warming up to this blogging lark so I left the camera alone for a few days at the risk of offending my girlfriend, who’s probably getting a bit fed up of having to wait for food to be photographed before it can be eaten. However, that doesn’t mean we stopped eating so here’s a quick summary of my food weekend. Continue reading “My food weekend – Franco’s and a Sunday Roast”
