This totally isn’t a stopgap post because I feel guilty I haven’t posted anything this week. Well… OK it is.
Beans on toast is comfort food. Quick, simple, probably not very good for you but I love it anyway. When I get home from training in the evenings or just if I don’t fancy cooking much then this is what I turn to.
I do admit that beans on toast alone is a little boring so that’s why I add a couple of slices of cheese and some tabasco. I only like the fake plastic cheese slices though. None of your proper cheeses like cheddar here.
It’s one of those dishes that most people (except Angela who doesn’t like toast. Or beans.) secretly enjoys from time to time and I bet everyone has a special way of making it that they must follow each time. So let me know in the comments if you still crave beans on toast and how you like them!
Serves 1
2 slices bread (white, brown or in between. It’s your choice)
1 tin of Heinz baked beans (anything else just isn’t the same)
2 cheese slices
Margarine
Tabasco
Toast the bread and spread the margarine on top.
Place a slice of cheese on each bit of toast.
Heat the beans in a pan or in the microwave.
Stir in a splash of Tabasco and pour the beans evenly over the two slices.
Never tried that before! Looks pretty warm and delicious, especially the cheese will melt before you eat. Nice recipe!

Oh no, not the plastic cheese, did you know that they use the mouldy trimmings off the cheddar blocks to make that stuff? Also the cheese has to go on top of the beans and then be grilled. I guess there is more to this beans on toast dish than you would think 😉
We have it quite often – easy and quick but very satisfying and I still feel like the kids are getting some wholesome food. I pile on grated cheddar on the top instead of the plastic cheese. However, it is Tesco Value cheese so probably not really any better!
Mmmmm I love beans on toast! It must be good for you though, it’s one of your 5 a day! – at least that’s what I tell myself. I am ashamed to say that I’ve never even thought about adding anything other than beans and normally have mine with lots of butter (not very adventurous, me), but I like the idea of cheese, might have to give it a whirl next time!
